High School    by  Maggie Grinnell    MSuspense@aol.com

In high school, I was very shy, even up until my senior year but that would change.

I loved to dance. So I enrolled in dance class. Towards the end of the class, we had to work on a group routine. So I was paired with 3 other girls.

One of those girls picked a song by the rock group; Scorpions entitled 'Can't Live without You'.

We each wore white tee shirts, red bandanas, jeans and tennis shoes.

Somehow, I came out of my shell while performing to that song. I eyed the audience and gave it my all.

Everyone said what a good job I did and of course, I was thrilled.

From then on, I never put my head down. I was proud of doing a good job and at something that I enjoy doing.

So whenever I do get a little bit down or lack self-confidence, I put on 'Can't Live without You' and I am back on the stage in my high school auditorium.

Colleen    by Maggie Grinnell

My older sister, Colleen, taught me how to drive. She would drive us to Lacey Park, which was about 5 miles from my house. She parked the car and let me drive around the park's perimeter for a while.

If I did a good job, I was rewarded. If I did a bad job like sway into the opposite lane or exceed the speed limit, I was treated to silence on the way home.

My reward was Jack in the Box. We always ordered 2 Chicken Supremes. We then parked, talked and ate. After our little secret outing, we went home.

What brings me back to those learning-to-drive nights is a certain song. That song is 'Ride like the Wind' by Christopher Cross.

Each time I hear that song, I think of my mom's station wagon and my sister and I parked alongside Lacey Park.

Maggie Grinnell is from San Diego, California. She has written several short suspense stories and many poems. She is currently working on a short story about a girl who graduated from high school and is traveling to New York where she will be the assistant to the New York Times editor and then the adventure begins.
