"Proud to be an American" by Karrie

The men in my life have all proudly served their country in the
Armed Forces. So I've always been patriotic, but I grew up without
understanding it firsthand... until September 11th.  Our country
experienced tragedy as none of us ever could have imagined.
We instantly became brothers and sisters, united in our fear,
our grief and our despair. Never had we been more proud to be
American.
Before that day, I had heard Lee Greenwood sing those exact words.
But they were just that...words.  I'll never forget hearing this
song on TV for the first time after the attack.
Never before had a song touched me so deeply.  As I listened,
I sat perfectly still...quietly shaking and sobbing.  For I finally
understood what those words really meant...
"And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I'd gladly stand up next to you,
and defend her still today.
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land!
God Bless The U.S.A.!"
Over the years, many men and women have given their lives for our
American beliefs and values. Life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness have come to us at a great price. And while many of us
have not felt the pain of this sacrifice, we should have been more
grateful, much sooner.
We have had it so good in our country, that we have taken peace
and prosperity for granted.
While the events of that day will be with people for a long time
to come, we must move forward with unity in our beliefs, respect
for all those who share our beliefs-regardless of their race or
religion, and the thanks and  respect we owe our public
servants...whether they be military or civilian.
While the loss was great, we must learn from the experience and
take comfort in the fact that it could have been more devastating.
We must be steadfast in our beliefs and be proud of them.
We must be proud to be Americans.
I know I am...and am reminded of this now every time I hear this
song.
