"Funkytown" by Lipps, Inc    by Nancy Jinkerson

My beloved sister Judy and I had made several trips to Mexico with one of our girlfriends that we grew up with.  After my divorce from my first husband in 1978, Judy talked me into taking a trip to Acapulco with her and several other girls we worked with.  The first day we just stayed around the condo and rested, but the next couple of days we met some of the employees at the hotel next door where we ate some of our meals.  One of them, David, invited us to go with him to what sounded like "Blue Swan".  When I asked him what "Blue Swan" was, he looked blankly at me as if he didn't know what I was talking about.

We all laughed when we found out it was a disco named "Plus One".  Obviously I had difficulty understanding him.  The next night we went to the disco and heard "Funkytown".  We had a blast and David danced with all of us.  From then on, "Funkytown" became our theme song.  We went to a local Woolworth's store and bought the record and tape which we constantly played.

My sister and I were very close and even when we came back to the states we played "Funkytown".  It brought back memories of all the fun we shared.  We got older and she met a man here at home and I remarried.  We promised each other we would go back to Mexico when we turned 80.  But unfortunately my sister passed away two years ago at the age of 59.  When I hear "Funkytown" I remember the most fun I have ever had in my life.  I know Judy really enjoyed Mexico and all the good memories.  The other girls and I may fulfill the dream Judy and I had of returning to our "Funkytown" (Acapulco).
